"Drawing lines in the sand and laying borders as tall as towers
I babble on until my voice is gone."This opening line can be interpreted as the group of boys finally splitting up. They make their own territories of "The Savage" and "The Civil". Jack felt as if his needs were not being fulfilled, so he took matters into his own hands and made his own tribe. Ralph, had his main goal of being rescued, which he was thinking for the future and not the direct present like Jack. They each had different goals and that is a big factor in why they despised each other. That last lyric can represent how the conch was, in the end, useless. It brought peace for a moment, then people began to grow impatient and scared. I recognize that lyric as Ralph trying to get everyone's attention with the conch, since only one is supposed to speak at a time, but is unsuccessful due to the lack of rationality. So, his voice is lost amongst the chaos and the conch (and everything it represented) is shattered.
